Boyfriend is ashamed of my hustle
Dear Pastor,
I am 17 years old and I am having a problem. I live with my parents and three of my siblings — two boys and one girl. My brothers are older than us girls and they are working. My father is a farmer; that is the only way he earns money.
My sister and I have to beg our brothers for money because sometimes the money my mother gets is not enough for us to buy sanitary napkins.
I recently started talking to a guy and already he is asking me for sex. I told him that I am not ready to have sex with him, so he said he cannot have a serious relationship with me if I cannot give him what he wants.
My father is still paying for the house we are living in; he is really trying.
My sister does not have a boyfriend. I sometimes hustle on the street by selling drinks and sweets but I do not make much. My boyfriend saw me on the street and told me I should go to my yard because he does not want his girlfriend to be seen on the street selling juice.
Is there anything wrong with hustling on the street? He told me that, if I start by selling on the street, I would sell myself to men. I feel very hurt by what he told me.
My parents raised us as Christians; we are always in church. We have relatives abroad who always try to help us. They send us nice clothes and shoes, so people think we are rich. Even the guy who likes me questions me by saying how come I need money and I am always dressed nicely.
I do not want to do anything that would cause my parents to be embarrassed. Do you think I should tell my parents about this guy who likes me? And is there anything wrong if I sell drinks and sweets to help myself?
Please give me your advice.
R.
Dear R..,
I am glad to hear from you, and I want to encourage you to continue to walk uprightly. Your parents are trying their best to support the family and you are not doing anything wrong by trying to help yourself through selling juice and sweets on the street.
You say that you have relatives who often send items to the family. I am assuming that they send these things in barrels. May I suggest that, whenever you speak with them, you ask them to include sanitary items for you and your sister?
This young man who is showing interest in you does not mean you any good. His aim is only to have a sexual relationship with you. You should seriously consider dropping him as a friend.
Continue to be a very good young woman, and let me hear about your progress.
Pastor
