Red Hills FC craft win with set-piece goals
Red Hills FC were one of five winners on the opening day of the Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) Wray and Nephew Championship League on Saturday.
Last season's Major League finalists, Red Hills are one of the teams expected to challenge for the title this season, and on Saturday, the Belvedere-based team got goals from Donovan Segree and Terron Phillips in a 2-0 win over Duhaney Park.
Assistant coach Fabian Swaby was pleased his team got off the mark on the competition's opening day.
"It is great to start off on the front foot in any competition. The game against Duhaney Park was very tactical," Swaby said. "We never got to play our game because of the conditions, the wind," he said.
"We had to adjust and try from set-pieces because we noticed they have small players. So we tried from set-pieces and got two goals from it."
Red Hills will face last season's Championship finalist, Constant Spring, in their next match, and Swaby believes that they can make home advantage count.
"Constant Spring will be a tough challenge. It's a home game, and I think we can take advantage of that and take three points on Saturday."
In other games, Constant Spring stopped Shortwood 2-1 with strikes from Shekeem Morrison and Tafari Richards. Alex Bagalue got Shortwood's goal.
In the other Zone A game, Olympic Gardens beat Cooreville 3-1 on a hat-trick from Cheanardo Anderson. Nicholas Mattis scored for Cooreville.
August Town edged former Corporate Area kingpins Boys Town 2-1 in one of several Zone B encounters. Ika Hudson and Kemar Williams scored for August Town.
New Kingston also won by a similar 2-1 scoreline as they turned back Brown's Town through goals from Romario Bryan and Adrian Davis. Brown's Town consolation came from Romar Whyte.
The other match in Zone B, between Barbican and Seaview Gardens, ended 1-1.
Meanwhile, the Zone A, Major League action, Mountain View FC and Allman-Woodford drew 1-1, Rockfort beat Santos 2-0 and Bull Bay defeated Central Kingston FC 3-0.
In Zone B, Pembroke Hall won 2-1 against Meadhaven and Police National beat Liguanea 4-1.
The competitions resume on Saturday.
