Clunis disappointed, but grateful after injury-ravaged season
TOKYO, Japan:
Having missed out on a spot in the women's hammer throw final at the World Athletics Championships, Jamaica's Nayoka Clunis said she is disappointed, but grateful for having the opportunity to represent her country.
"I'm kind of disappointed, but I can't be mad because this year has been a trying year," she said.
Clunis is the only Jamaican woman to have competed in the hammer throw, having made her debut at the World Championship in Budapest in 2023.
Now having made her second appearance at a high-level global championship, Clunis is happy to continue paving the way for Jamaica and hopes that there will be other athletes who follow in her footsteps.
"I'm super grateful for the opportunity to compete and to represent my country once more," said Clunis.
"I'm the first. But there are a lot more to come and I'm grateful for the opportunity to be the flagbearer of the event moving forward and creating history every time I step on the track."
INJURIES
Clunis is particularly proud she was able to compete at the championships following her recent string of injuries.
Dating back to the October last year, Clunis said there was rarely a month that she was healthy, after various injuries to her shoulders, hips and feet.
"I dislocated my shoulder twice in November and then I dealt with plantar fasciitis, where I couldn't walk for like four to six weeks," she chronicled.
"I came back from that and as soon as training started going well again, I met in a car accident. Someone rear-ended me and because of my prior car accidents and concussion, I had to be on two weeks no training or anything."
She continued: "I then came back in March and I thought I was gonna have a great year and then in April I strained my left abductor, and then in May I strained my left quad.
"In June, my abductor started to aggravate again and in July I sprained my wrist so this entire year has been recovering from injuries and injuries and injuries and trying to stay as healthy as possible."
With her history of injuries, Clunis is now happy to have concluded her season as healthy as possible.
"I'm just grateful for the opportunity to finish the season as healthy as I can," she said.
