Man who choked partner, set her ablaze gets over 14 years behind bars

July 13, 2026

Twenty-eight-year-old Lavar Braham of Trainline, Gregory Park, Portmore, was sentenced in the St Catherine Circuit Court on Friday after being convicted of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm with intent.

Justice Yvonne Brown sentenced Braham to 14 years and seven months' imprisonment on that charge.

He was also sentenced to three years, two months and 28 days' imprisonment for choking with intent.

The case stems from a September 2022 attack after the couple's intimate relationship reportedly turned sour.

According to the prosecution, Braham assaulted the complainant, beating and choking her until she became unconscious.

He then allegedly poured alcohol over her body and set her ablaze, leaving her with severe injuries that required hospitalisation.

Detectives assigned to the Portmore Police launched an investigation, which led to Braham's arrest.

He was later charged following a question-and-answer session.
