JP arrested for allegedly taking money to sign documents

Law enforcement says they have in custody a jsutice of the peace (JP) who was arrested on Monday during a sting operation for allegedly collecting money for signing official documents.

The JP was arrested for breaches of the Corruption Prevention Act, specifically soliciting and accepting money, as well as misconduct in a public office.

The identity of the JP, who is reportedly based in Manchester, is being withheld pending further investigations.

Members of the St Andrew North Police Division carried out the sting after receiving reports that a justice of the peace was soliciting money to sign documents for members of the public, some of whom were known to him and others who were not, The STAR understands.

During the operation, the suspect reportedly solicited money to sign a document presented for verification. The official was subsequently arrested.

The JP was later questioned but remains in police custody. It is not yet clear when they will be formally charged or brought before the court.

Under Jamaican law, justices of the peace are prohibited from soliciting or accepting payment for carrying out their official responsibilities, including signing and witnessing documents. Authorities say such actions undermine public confidence in the justice system.
