Update|Three men killed on Mandela Highway identified
Three men who were shot and killed during an alleged shootout with the police along Mandela Highway yesterday have been identified.
They are 21-year-old Davian McLean of Cooreville Gardens, Kingston 20; Salime Fitzgerald, otherwise called 'Smeagle', of New Lincoln Road, Kingston 5; and 20-year-old Paul Donaldson of Seaview Avenue, Kingston 13.
The STAR understands that police were seeking to apprehend Smeagle, who was wanted in connection with the shooting death of Corporal Christopher Smith on December 6, 2024, at a Texaco gas station in St Andrew.
Police say members of the Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime Division intercepted a black Honda Fit travelling towards Spanish Town shortly before midday. The occupants reportedly opened fire, triggering a shootout that left Smeagle and the two other men fatally wounded.
They were taken to the Spanish Town Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
No member of the police team was injured.
Police say they seized a Taurus pistol with a magazine containing nine rounds and a Beretta pistol with a magazine containing nine rounds.
The Independent Commission of Investigations has launched a probe.
