‘My life was on hold’ Munga reflects on nine-year legal fight

June 15, 2026

After nearly a decade under the shadow of a murder charge, dancehall artiste Munga Honorable is finally breathing free air again—describing his long legal battle as “nine years of biblical tribulation” after he and co-accused Sheridan Gordon were freed in the Home Circuit Court on Friday.

The entertainer, whose given name is Damian Rhodes, said the ruling marks a major turning point in his life, reopening doors that had long been closed by legal uncertainty and prolonged court proceedings.

Speaking with THE STAR on Saturday, Munga said the charge and the years of uncertainty made it difficult to plan for the future or move forward with confidence.

“My career and personal life were tremendously hindered and limited, but I know that I couldn’t focus on the lows and still maintained hope. I’m just thankful to the expertise and intense effort of my defence team, respectively, and am truly elated about the outcome.”

Rhoden was represented by attorneys-at-law Christopher Townsend, Kaysian Kennedy-Sherman, and Chadwick Berry.

The matter stems from the 2017 killing of Cleveland Smith in Ackee Walk, St Andrew. It concluded in the Home Circuit Court in Kingston after the prosecution indicated it would offer no further evidence and chose not to continue with the case, resulting in both Rhodes and Gordon being freed.

Throughout the proceedings, Munga—known for his influential catalogue in dancehall—maintained his innocence while continuing to record music and stay connected with fans despite the pressure of an ongoing court case.

Though he was out on bail during the period, the artiste said life often felt suspended. “I stayed strong by maintaining my faith in Rastafari and confidence in my innocence. Several artistes such as Bounty Killer, Capleton, Popcaan, Nitty Kutchie and others stayed in touch and motivated or encouraged me.”

Now focused on the future, Munga says he is ready to move forward with renewed purpose, turning his attention to music, international performances, and rebuilding momentum in his career.

“The first thing I did when I heard that it was over was to find my mother and hug her. This chapter closes, and another begins. My future is now defined by creativity, opportunity, and freedom. I thank my fans for all the support throughout and all the well wishes since. You are truly appreci-loved.”
