Players’ safety ‘the most important thing’ - D’Cup coaches satisfied with suspension of football competition
With the impending hurricane putting a halt to the ISSA WATA daCosta football competition, coaches Lester Hibbert of Garvey Maceo High and Andre Peart of Glenmuir High expressed that they were comfortable with the pause, but emphasised that the safety of the players and their families was the top priority.
"The thing is, we do not know how long it will be for. However, the most important thing right now is the safety of the boys and their families," said Peart.
Hibbert shared similar sentiments.
"For me, the break is okay. This is out of our control. It's a natural disaster, so we just have to go through the process," he said.
"I'm just hoping that all the players and their families stay safe as we do not know what the outcome will be after this."
Both teams are in the tough Zone 3, regarded as the 'Group of Death', which also includes another Clarendon powerhouse, Clarendon College, and western team Maggotty High. Only one or two of the Clarendon teams are expected to advance to the quarter-finals.
Glenmuir drew first blood with a 1-0 home win over Maggotty and now sit atop the standings with maximum three points. Meanwhile, defending champions Garvey Maceo and Clarendon College - the past two winners of the competition - are tied on one point each after playing to a goalless draw in their opening match at Wembley Centre of Excellence.
It's expected to be a dogfight in the remaining matches, as all four teams - including Maggotty, who are yet to get off the mark - still have a chance to advance.
Glenmuir, the current leaders, will play away to Clarendon College and host Garvey Maceo in their final two matches. Both teams will be meeting for the third time this season with the tie being 1-1. This third meeting will be massive and the result could decide the fate of either team going forward.
The defending champions will be at home to Maggotty, while Clarendon College will travel to face the same opponent. Home advantage could prove crucial as the group battle is expected to go right down to the wire.
