Dunbeholden shock Cavalier
New Dunbeholden coach Harold Thomas had a dream start when his team clipped Cavalier 1-0 in the opening match of a Jamaica Premier League double-header at the Stadium East field yesterday.
The St Catherine-based club had lost their two opening matches and the veteran coach, who was brought in to replace Curtis Hamilton, described yesterday's result as a 'big win'.
"It is a big result for us. It is a short league, so every win is important. We have things to do to get the team to the next level so we will not be resting on our laurels because we didn't come for just three points, we came for 33 points. That is not possible any more but we are trying to go as far as we can," Thomas said.
The win was Dunbeholden's third successive over their opponents and Thomas said that was one of the big motivating factors going into the match.
"We got the better of this team on a few occasions. That was part of the motivation but it is also a part of the challenge.
"We knew they would be coming hard. We hoped we could match up with them physically because they are a team in form and in terms of condition, they are better than us right now," he added.
Andre Dyce fired Dunbeholden into an early lead when he stabbed home a Rondee Smith corner after four minutes.
Courtney Allen and Bryan English should have equalised for Cavalier but neither could make their opportunities count.
Cavalier continued to push in the second half but found the St Catherine team difficult to beak down.
Their best efforts came from Dwayne Atkinson's free kick in the 81st minute and a header from Kyle Ming moments later.
Cavalier coach, Rudolph Speid, said the result was a huge setback but promised they will bounce back.
"Going behind so early put the team at a disadvantage. It is a setback for us but that is how it is when you have younger players. Today was not a good day for us so we will have to bounce back," he said. In yesterday's second match Waterhouse and Vere United drew 0-0.
